As Barack Obama ponders on the huge responsiblities he is about to face, newspapers have seized on this historic moment.
The New York Times has, as always, excelent coverage of this overwhelmingly historic event.
The biggest losers in this elections are, well, conservatives, not republicans. As I have argued before both are not synonyms. Conservatives just happened to be in the Republican Party, which they kidnapped at the end of the 60s and people who argue for and promote true republican values are nowhere to be found. I refuse to believe this is the same party that sent a brigade (Abraham Lincoln Brigade) to defend the Spanish Republic in the 1930s. Perhaps the only true republican in that collectivity is Colin Powell, who I hope will have an important position in the coming administration.
Conservatives, apparently, have no clue. In a display of their typical undemocratic attitude the Republican National Committee did not display any message congratulating the President-elect. It did display messages patting republican victors on the back and thanking Senator McCain and Governor Palin for running. Most disturbingly still is the message posted on the pages of the proto-fascist National Republican Trust, titled "our job is not finished". Most interestingly, the argument accusing Obama's presidential campaign of stealing the election,
During this election, we witnessed the stealing of the American presidency. More than $600 million flowed into the Democratic candidate’s campaign. Nearly half of this amount was from donors that have still not been disclosed. Of the known donors, up to $60 million came from foreign sources and were likely illegal. What sore losers! The funny thing about this is the neglect to mention how republicans (conservatives, really) manage, with the help of the US Supreme Court to steal the 2000 election. Also witness the arrogance of this organization by pointing out, according to their blurred point of view, the reason for republicans losing at the polls,
Whatever the outcome of the election, we at The National Republican Trust (GOPtrust.com) know that had we been fully funded even a month ago, the election would never have been in doubt.See how contradictory their argument is. So lack of money for their anti-democratic propaganda is the reason Obama won the election. It is interesting how fixation on money and not promoting democratic and a notion of what is fair in politics and policy fit into both arguments. When the money and contributions flowed to Bush's presidential campaign social conservatives had nothing to say, but when millions of dollars went towards the promotion of fundamental change in the United States, then there is a problem.
Americans must remain vigilant.
